TSR | We went right down to individual voter level. We knew who would be voting, and where. If a person was living away from his or her hometown, all we needed was a name and address. We would contact that person and ask him or her to return home to vote, and also alerted the nearest Wanita UMNO branch to locate that voter.

We could also assess from reactions to our door-to-door visits whether a voter supported BN or not. If the person seemed undecided, we would identify him as being ‘grey’ or kelabu. We conducted our own in-house training for those who did the house calls. We would call them Ketua 10 (leader of 10), because each team would be in charge of 10 houses.

I did some house calls myself. I would introduce myself, then ask the people what they wanted or what problems they faced. During election year, it’s easier to determine which party people supported. Sometimes, they would hang flags of their party outside their home. We’d give the homes of those who were openly supporting the Opposition a miss, as trying to convince them to change sides is usually a waste of time.
